LEECH LAKE DIVISION OF RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
-FORESTRY DEPARTMENT-
WHAT WE DO...
The Leech Lake Forestry Department is responsible for all forestry related activities on tribal, band, and allotted lands located within the boundaries of the Leech Lake Reservation. These activities include, but are not limited to; prepare and administer timber sales, making sure there is adequate artificial/natural forest regeneration in applicable areas, timber trespass investigation which are then reported to the BIA for mitigation, timber stand improvement projects (forest development), maintaining an updated forest inventory, and the overall management of timber resources for the betterment of members of the tribe and wildlife habitat.
Forest development projects fall largely into two areas; tree planting and stand improvements. Acreage planted each year can vary greatly. Stand improvements can be brushing projects, plantation thinning, or general timber stand improvement projects.
Forest inventorying is an on-going project. It is the Forestry Department's goal to inventory one-tenth of the entire Reservation annually.
In addition to the above-mentioned responsibilities, the Leech Lake Forestry Department provides fuel wood permits to tribal members and offers advice on where to find a particular forest resource, such as sugar bushes, tepee poles, balsam boughs, and birch bark.
