STOCKING...
Fish stocking is conducted annually on the Reservation for various species by both the Fisheries program of the Reservation in addition to the MN Department of Natural Resources. Walleye eggs are collected in late April and incubated and hatched in the Tribal Fish Hatchery in Cass Lake. Once hatched, the walleye fry are stocked directly into lakes, or placed in rearing ponds where they grow until fall, at which time they are stocked as 4-8 inch fingerlings into lakes on the Reservation. The Reservation Fisheries Program also hatches and rears lake whitefish, and on occasion also rears tullibee, muskellunge, white sucker, and even a few trout for special projects.

Fish population monitoring
The fisheries program of the Leech Lake Band periodically conducts, or participates with other agencies like the MN Department of Natural Resources, US Forest Service, or US Fish and Wildlife Service in the survey and monitoring of fish population and other aquatic organism in the lakes and streams of the Reservation. We also monitor the harvest of fish by tribal members though subsistence netting and commercial harvest of rough fish.
